The window for most federal, state and county candidates to file for office is now open! It opened on Tuesday, May 21, and will remain open through Tuesday, June 4.
Major parties have until August 30 to submit their candidates. Contact your local clerk for the correct filing period for you municipality or school district.
Former state representative Kathy Tingelstad offers the following advice for Filing for Office:
Familiarize yourself with this one-page "Affidavit of Candidacy" form [ affidavit-of-candidacy.pdf ]. It will be notarized AT the Elections office. Be prepared to pay the $ fee, potentially with a check. BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR WEBSITE address ON that line ON the form!
Use the same name as on your signs. For example--Kathy (NOT Kathleen).
You will be handed a packet of "Candidate" materials. Don't be overwhelmed; review it over the next week or so--with your Campaign Treasurer and main Campaign Volunteers...
Filing for office is a big deal. It is not something many people do. On the day that you file, give yourself time to celebrate it. Have fun! Have people join you that are important to you.
If possible, file on a sunny day. Take pictures. Post them on your Facebook page and Website.
Within a few hours after filing, your candidacy will officially be posted on the Secretary of State's website. (See links below.) Check that website daily.
