News from our Representative in 52B

On April 28, Rep. Bianca Virnig sent her legislative update to constituents. As is always the case, Virnig’s email was an exercise in progressive hive mind. It’s one thing to have a representative whose views differ from your own, but an original thought once in a while would be refreshing. Below is our take on Virnig’s communication. A reminder that if your statehouse leaders’ values or priorities don’t align with your own, let them know. The silent majority is all too often drowned out by the always available professional protestors who descend with regularity upon the State Capitol.

Walz’s State of the State

Rep. Virnig seemed moved by Tim Walz’s recent speech, praising him for his “words of unity.” One wonders whether Virnig is aware of our governor’s recent multi-state comedy tour during which his language was divisive and derisive. We would ask Rep. Virnig, was the Schadenfreude experienced by Walz at Tesla’s declining stock unifying? If so, then Virnig, like Walz, owes District 52 pensioners an explanation given the state’s reliance on Tesla stock to honor their commitments to retirees.

South Metro Town Hall

Rep. Virnig praised constituents who attended a recent town hall. As usual, Virnig was heavy on hyperbole and low on details. According to Virnig, “Minnesotans are fired up about impacts on health care, the freedoms Donald Trump and Elon Musk are working to take away, and the impact on family budgets through increased costs due to reckless tariffs.” Setting aside whether Trump and/or Musk are responsible for any of the ills listed, we would remind Virnig that an $18 billion budget surplus would have been a nice rainy day fund in the event of federal cuts. What was your stance on spending vs. saving the surplus, Rep. Virnig?

Supporting Public Media

Rep. Virnig decried proposed cuts to “non-partisan” media organizations like NPR, MPR, and PBS. Setting aside the absurdity of non-partisan claims, if Virnig and like-minded consumers of public television and radio are that gung-ho about these outlets, perhaps support could be voluntary vs. mandatory. Virnig is oblivious to her own contradictions, decrying belt-tightening by constituents on one hand while demanding subsidies for state-sponsored media on the other. We’re more concerned about food on our families’ tables, Rep. Virnig, than those on Sesame Street.

Recipe of the Week

Speaking of food, leave it to Bianca Virnig to turn a recipe into fodder for division. Her preamble to a garlic noodle recipe states that food “fuels us to continue to fight extreme MAGA policies that threaten our democracy.” If we’re lucky, Virnig’s recipe will fuel a collective food coma that will put wanton spending on hold, if temporarily.

Virnig’s email ended, as always, with an entreaty to contact her. We encourage you to do just that. Call or write Rep. Bianca Virnig today and let her know—politely—that her progressive policies don’t align with the values of our district.
