MARCH  20 UPDATE: The Senate voted 51–47 to bring the bill to the floor.

Legislative Status

  • The Senate voted 51–47 to bring the bill to the floor.
  • All Republicans supported the motion except Lisa Murkowski, with Tom Tillis absent.
  • Democrats are uniformly opposed.
  • The bill likely will not pass without 60 votes unless Republicans force a prolonged “talking filibuster” according to Sen. Ted Cruz.

Americans are making their voices heard! Some U.S. senators are listening!

27 Senators have committed to using the talking filibuster to pass the SAVE America Act.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune had been stalling this bill, making excuses why it wouldn't pass. He started feeling the pressure to move the bill!

Now, because of the actions of so many citizens making their voices heard, Sen. Thune has announced that he will bring the bill to the floor and has promised a full and robust debate in the upcoming week of March 16th.

You can help! Here's what to do:

#1) Continue to call Sen. Thune to make sure he does not call for cloture, which would end the debate and kill the bill. Thank him for moving the bill, but demand that he do what he can to get the bill to pass. Demand the talking filibuster and tell him you want to hear why Democrats oppose this common sense bill.

Senator Thune: (202) 224-2321

#2) Call Republican Senators that are still not supporting the bill and demand that they commit to support the talking filibuster and vote YES for the bill. Thank the senators that are supporting passing the bill via the standing filibuster, and demand they push the other senators to also support the bill.  Senate Phone List

TALKING POINTS:

- Polls show over 70% of Democrats and 95% of Republicans want what’s in this bill

- Tell them "They were elected specifically to secure our elections, not to try to or to find weak excuses to do nothing. You MUST pass the SAVE America Act. It is your duty and obligation."

- Voter rolls in many states are extremely inaccurate and include non-citizens. According to The Heritage Foundation, more than 11,000 aliens were on their voter rolls, at least 616 in New Jersey, and almost 200 in Arizona.

- In Pennsylvania and many other states, Automatic Motor Voter Registration automatically registers anyone to vote who gets a new drivers' license or a renewal, which one must opt-out of to register to vote. No ID or proof is required to register. It is on the honor system. We need to have proof of citizenship to register and voter ID to vote.

- The Talking Filibuster is not the same thing as the “nuclear option,” which would do away with the filibuster entirely. This is for this bill only, and does not change the Senate rules.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act or Save America Act amends the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to require proof of United States citizenship to register an individual to vote in elections for Federal office.
